Free Crochet Pattern: Women's Vertical Cable Beanie with Slouchy Option

(Shown in Red Heart With Love Pewter & White with White Lion Brand Pom)

Hello crochet friends! A few weeks ago I shared on Instagram a beanie I was working on with a vertical cable and now that it has been tested a few times I am very excited to share the finished pattern with you! Originally I only created the beanie version but I thought it would work great as a slouchy hat too (this is now my fav. slouchy hat!) so I have both options written within the pattern.

(Shown in Big Twist Premium Ivory & Red Heart With Love Black with a Black Lion Brand Pom)

If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Crochet cables are not the simplest instructions to write out so I've also included a short photo tutorial for the turning rows of the cable.

Thanks so much for stopping by!
-Jenni

Ears
(Make 4, 2 outside ears & 2 inside)

Row 1: Ch 7, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across. Ch 1, turn. (6)
Row 2: Hdc2tog, hdc in 2, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (4)
Row 3: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (4)
Row 4: Hdc2tog, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (2)
Row 5: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (2)
Row 6: Hdc2tog. Fasten off. (1)

Fasten off.

To complete the ears you now need to hold together one outside ear to one inside ear, like so:

Using the outside ear color, join with a sl st in the lower right corner of the ear, ch 1. Work a sc in the same space as the ch 1.

Continue to sc across this side of the ear until you reach the point of the ear. When you reach the point, work all of the following stitches into the same space: [sc, ch 2, sc]. Then proceed to sc down the left side of the ear. There is no need to sc along the bottom of the ear. Fasten off leaving a long end for sewing.

Repeat for the 2nd ear.

Sew ears onto hat and sew in all your ends and you're done!

I hope you have a very Happy Halloween!
