Free Crochet Pattern: Women's Slouchy Textured Beanie

IMPORTANT NOTE: This pattern will be removed and replaced with an updated version on October 5, 2020.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: I've decided to put this pattern back up because I have received many emails requesting it but be warned, this is an older pattern of mine and doesn't read as well as my newer patterns. I did update this pattern and simplify it, you can find that pattern here:

This particular pattern has some great photos posted on Ravelry by fellow crocheters and I wanted to say thanks to everyone who has given it a try, I love seeing how you have used the pattern!

There is now an infinity scarf to match this hat, you can find it here: Textured Infinity Scarf
If you're not into infinity scarves, there is also a traditional scarf version here: Textured Scarf

Thanks so much for stopping by!
-Jenni

Fasten off and sew in ends.

Now you can add a pom pom to the top of the hat!  I use my hand to make my pom poms and wrap the yarn around and around my hand (about 100 times). Lay out a long piece of yarn (approx. 18"). Carefully slip the yarn off of your hand and lay on top of the long piece of yarn, tie a knot twice. Using your tapestry needle; sew the long yarn ends in and out of the pom pom over and over. Add a dab or two of fabric glue to the center. Let dry. Cut through all your loops and trim up your pom pom. Sew to the top of hat.

  1. This is my absolute favorite pattern I have ever found is there any way I could pay for the pattern so that I could sell the hats that I make from it or put a link to your pattern?

  2. I want to thank you so much for those gorgeous patterns for the hat & the cowl neck scarf. They are so beautiful and I will start making some for my 5 grand-daughters as Christmas presents.....and get them done early, as I'm sure I'll spot other nice patterns before Christmas rolls around. Once again, thank you.

  5. Hi Jenni! I have made this hat twice now and it's so lovely. Only problem is, the second time I used a slightly heavier yarn and the hat has come out HUGE! I wondered if you know a way to shrink it down a bit, as it's a shame not to wear it! Thanks for any tips, Amy x

    1. Maybe you can work some decreases in the last couple of rows or would it still be too bulky at the top of the hat?

  8. Hi! I'm working on this beautiful hat now. For rows 5-6 the fpdc I'm not sure how to work them. One way looks like there are gaps and the other way the stitches look too close together. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi Sharon, I've never tried this hat with ear flaps but I like the idea! I worked up some ear flaps on my own textured slouchy beanie, here's the quick pattern for you.

If you want to keep with the theme and have some texture on the earflaps you can work the rows in the BLO (back loop only).

      For the 1st ear flap:

Join with a sl st, ch 1.

      Row 1: Hdc in 12. Ch 1, turn. (12)
      Row 2: Hdc2tog, hdc in 8, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (10)
Row 3: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (10)
      Row 4: Hdc2tog, hdc in 6, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (8)
Row 5: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (8)
      Row 6: Hdc2tog, hdc in 4, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (6)
Row 7: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (6)
      Row 8: Hdc2tog, hdc in 2, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (4)
Row 9: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (4)
      Row 10: Hdc2tog, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (2)
      Row 11: Hdc2tog. (1)

      Fasten off.

You'll need to leave 24 stitches unworked in the front of the hat and 17 in the back of the hat.

      For the 2nd ear flap:

Join with a sl st, ch 1.

      Row 1: Hdc in 12. Ch 1, turn. (12)
      Row 2: Hdc2tog, hdc in 8, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (10)
Row 3: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (10)
      Row 4: Hdc2tog, hdc in 6, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (8)
Row 5: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (8)
      Row 6: Hdc2tog, hdc in 4, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (6)
Row 7: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (6)
      Row 8: Hdc2tog, hdc in 2, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (4)
Row 9: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (4)
      Row 10: Hdc2tog, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (2)
      Row 11: Hdc2tog. (1)

Do not fasten off, work a row of sc's around the hat and earflaps.

Fasten off and sew in the ends.

  10. I'm a bit of a beginner and don't quite understand rows 5-6. If I do the "dc in next, fpdc in next" it adds stiches. I just ended up doing fpdc all the way around. Can you maybe explaine those rows - in beginners terms please :-)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When you work a fpdc you are working around the stitch which leave the loops at the top un-worked. You need to leave those loops un-worked and move on to the next open loops. Hmmm...sorry if that's difficult to understand. I could better explain it with photos if you'd like. You can message me on facebook @ facebook.com/byjennidesigns or email me at byjennidesigns@gmail.com

    2. I love all your designs, they're beautiful.
I just had one question on rows 5-6 aswell, so, I go around the post, then miss the unworked stitch at the top, which brings me to my next fpdc, do I skip the front post stitch that's next to the dc and go onto the next post or is it only the top dc stitch I leave unworked? I'm sorry if that doesn't make sense, it's difficult trying to explain what I mean. Have a great day!

  11. For round 3, do you do all the stitches in the back loop?

  12. Hi Jenni, would love to have a go at creating your beautiful hat, unfortunately I live in the U.K. I have tried quite a few sites to try and find a conversion for the wool type and amounts, but they are all saying different. Would love it if you could advise me,
    Many thanks Su x

It's absolutely lovely, thank you!

  15. Hi Jenni, I have made this hat twice now, and i absolutely love it. It is the first time I was able to follow a pattern to a "T" and have it turn out well. The second time I decreased the number of rows as it was too slouchy for my taste, but it came out great. Thanks so much for sharing!!!! I am starting the matching scarf now. :)

    1. Hello Carrie! I am happy to hear my pattern so much and glad it worked out well for you! I am currently editing the scarf pattern to fix an issue with the edge curling a bit. The pattern is still up if you want to give it a try or I'll have the new version up in a few days. :)

  16. Hi Jenni! Could you explain to me how you counted each row? I seem to get more stitches than what is stated. Do you not count the ch 2 at the beginning of each row? I get a total of 12 in magic ring including the ch2 and then 24 in the 2nd row and so forth... I'm sorry I don't get it!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Maria, if you read under the Important Notes section you'll see that the ch 2 does not count as a dc in this pattern therefor it shouldn't be counted in the stitch count.

    1. You can try going up a hook size and then when you get to row 9 you should have a better idea if it's going to fit correctly.

  24. Hi Jenni!!! I am going to give your pattern a try. I have had great difficulty in finding a pattern that isn't too large and too difficult for me to learn. This is my first attempt at making a stocking cap with a pom pom. Is this pattern actually made in rounds instead of the stated rows?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi Jenni!!! This is my first attempt at making me a stocking cap I have been crocheting since 1975. I have never been able to get the gauge right for a hat or crochet garment until now! Thank-You so very much for this pattern. I live on Social Security Disability and unfortunately money is a big issue for me. I have to rely on free patterns by necessity. This stocking hat fits perfectly and will keep me warm during the cold Missouri winters. Blessings to you for making these patterns available to people like me. Now to make the matching scarf and cowl.

  29. I have a question about Rows 5 & 6. If I start my fpdc in the 2nd stitch, I end up with only 20 fpdc. And then what happens to the first stitch? If I only ch 2 in that stitch, would I lose it as a stitch because the ch 2's don't count as stitches?

  30. Hats like this have seemed too difficult for me as I have only been crocheting for a couple of years. I decided to tackle this one because I liked the looks of it so much. I am almost finished with it and it is looking beautiful. Thank you so much for a beautiful and easy-to-read pattern.

  34. I used Lion Brand Heartland yard with the I hook and I had to cut the number of rows as it became very long. The circumference of the hat is right and the hat looks great. I thought maybe I should use an H hook instead to get through all rows. What are your thoughts?
